ARTISTX

A space to amplify and connect the voices of Abya Yala identifying artists in Turtle Island - Canada.

Home: Welcome

Artistx acknowledges that the land on which we work is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, the Métis, and most recently, the territory of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation. This territory was the subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy and the Ojibwe and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. This territory is also covered by the Upper Canada Treaties. Today, the meeting place of Toronto (from the Haudenosaunee word Tkaronto) is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and live in this territory.

WHO'S BEHIND ARTISTX AND WHY?

Hola hola, I am Maria Paula, originally from the territory in Abya Yala known as Colombia, from the city of Bacatá.

I am a multidisciplinary artist most commonly known as an Actor.

Why Artistx? Because as a naturalized Canadian and graduate from two Performing Arts Canadian institutions back in 2013, I deeply NEEDED to see more, and more accurate representation of our people in the arts, in the education system, in entrepreneurial recognition, in every day conversations. Seeking approval and cultural assimilation are not the only ways to be part of Turtle Island - Canada. Abya Yala peoples have a beautiful and strong capacity to unite, innovate, and grow culture and communities.

I saw too, my Abya Yala community hiding behind this "Latinidad" we say we share, without the accountability of what that means. I saw the clear division of racialized peoples, background, status, education, and sexual and gender expressions, within OUR own community.

I needed to give these experiences a place where we can talk and do something about it, and in my life, my medium has been art. As a life long artist who believes strongly in mine, all other artistic folk, and the power we hold in creating new stories for humanity, I created this space to amplify our voices, celebrate our people, and take accountability for who we are and what we are capable of.
